Tel Aviv summers are relentless. When your air conditioner breaks down in July, finding a reliable AC technician isn't optional — it's urgent. This guide covers what you need to know about AC installation, servicing, and repair in Tel Aviv, along with realistic costs.
Tel Aviv AC Basics: What Most Apartments Have
The vast majority of Tel Aviv apartments use inverter split-unit systems (מזגן מינִי-מרכזי). These are the wall-mounted indoor units connected to an outdoor compressor. Older apartments may have older non-inverter units that are far less energy efficient and more prone to breakdowns.
When to Call an AC Technician
- Unit blows warm air despite being set to cool
- Unusual noises — grinding, rattling, or squealing
- Water dripping from the indoor unit onto walls or floors
- Strong musty or burning smell when running
- Unit turns on but shuts off within minutes
- Remote control no longer works (after replacing batteries)
Annual Servicing: Don't Skip It
Most AC technicians in Israel recommend servicing your unit once a year — ideally in early spring before the summer heat hits. A standard service includes cleaning the filters, checking refrigerant levels, clearing the drainage pipe, and testing all functions. It typically costs ₪180–₪320 per unit and prevents expensive breakdowns mid-summer.
Pro tip: Book your annual AC service in March or April. By May, every technician in Tel Aviv is slammed. Spring appointments are easier to get and often slightly cheaper.
Installation in Tel Aviv Buildings
Installing a new AC unit in a Tel Aviv apartment building requires approval from the building's va'ad bayit (house committee) for the outdoor compressor placement. Your technician should be familiar with this process. Some buildings have designated compressor areas on the roof or in the parking level; others require attaching to the exterior wall.
