Tel Aviv has a pest problem. The warm climate, dense urban housing, old building stock, and proximity to green areas mean that cockroaches, ants, rodents, and bed bugs are a routine reality for many residents.
The Most Common Pests in Tel Aviv
- German and American cockroaches — the most reported pest in Tel Aviv, especially in older buildings and ground-floor units
- Pharaoh ants — notoriously difficult to eradicate; over-the-counter sprays often make infestations worse by splitting colonies
- Bed bugs — on the rise in Israel following increased international travel; spread easily between apartment units
- Rats and mice — common near parks, the port area, and older neighborhoods like Jaffa and Florentin
Why DIY Pest Control Often Backfires
Supermarket sprays work for very minor issues. For anything beyond that, professional-grade treatments are far more effective. A certified pest control technician (מדביר) licensed by the Ministry of Health uses products and techniques unavailable to the public. Ants are notorious for scattering and multiplying when treated incorrectly.
Important: If you live in an apartment building, a pest infestation often requires treatment of the entire building — not just your unit. Treating one apartment will not solve a building-wide problem.
What to Expect
A licensed pest control technician will assess the infestation type and scale, identify entry points, apply targeted treatments, and advise on prevention. Most treatments require a follow-up visit 2–4 weeks later. For bed bugs, heat treatment is the most effective method and requires vacating the apartment for several hours.
